About the author

 

            Mulk Raj Anand (1905 to 2004) was an Indian English writer is considered as one of the pioneer of Indo Anglican fiction together with R.K Narayan and Raja Rao. Anand is remembered for his interpretation of poor caste in Indian society.

            Anand is mostly admired for novel and short stories which are classics of modern Indian English literature, Mulk Raj Anand also considered as one of the writers to introduce Punjabi and Hindustani idioms in English he got Sahitya Academy Award in 1971 and Padma Bhushan.

 

Introduction

 

            Two Lady Rams is a short story written by Indian English writer Mulk Raj Anand it was originally published in collection of the short stories “Man whose name did not appear in the Census and other stories”.

 

            The story revolves around three main characters Lala Zinda Ram his two wife Sukhi and Shakuntala, Zinda Ram was facing a domestic problems due to having two wives. As the invitation came from for the garden party at the Governor House and conflict arises between two wives.

 

Summary

 

            The story of Two Lady Rams is about Lala Jinda Ram and his two wives.Ram is an ordinary shopkeeper who married to a women named Sukhi and Shakuntala he was forced to call them Lady rams to calm the bitterness and high blow war between his two wives.

 

            The elder wife of Jinda Ram, Sukhi cannot give him a child so he married to Shakuntala however Sukhi gave Jinda Ram a financial wealth to his life as she brought a big amount of dowry while the second wife introduced romance in his life.

 

            Jinda Ram given the title of Knighthood by British Empire because of his sundry services to colonial Regime the problem arises because both the wives wanted the title of lady Ram as news came Jinda Ram is given the title of Knighthood and now the question arises that the title lady Ram will be given to which wife.

 

            Things got more complicated when an invitation came to Jhinda Ram for the garden party which is going to be held at the residence of governor, the party was organized for the ceremony of giving honor and medals two dignitaries and investors.

 

            The main problem is that invitation is of for Sri Jhinda Ram and Lady Rama but he had two wives and Jhindaa Ram is confused whom to take to the party as he was more attached to his second wife because of their romance so he asked Shakuntala to get dressed in a new sari for the party.

 

            The information reached to his first wife Sulhi and she got so Furious and started fighting with Shakuntala she started abusing and cursing Shakuntala so Jhinda Ram decided to put it to end by dragging Sukhi by hair out of the house.

 

            After ending this drama Jhinda Ram driver witness all this event both the wives and got ready in Sari as he does rituals in the arms driver suggested him to take both his wife to the garden Party Zhinda Ram has two wives and they went to the garden party at the Governor house.

 

            Both the wives dress very well in the party so they were the centre of talk instead of honors and dignities this becomes a matter discussion to. Two Lady Rams become the point of discussion among the Governor and his wife given the title “The star of the Knight Commander of the Indian Empire” to Jhinda Ram.

 

            Her excellency admired two Lady Rams for their Saris and they had a fun night, the story concluded happily on the note from that day onwards Sir Jhinda and his wifes called as two Lady Rams.

 

Conclusion

 

            As a conclusion the story ends with Happy Ending as Jhinda Ram and his two wives Sukhi and Shakuntala enjoy the garden party however they becomes a talking point among the villagers.
